Post Extraction Care

Post Extraction Care

It is extremely important to maintain sound oral hygiene after having an extraction. The mouth is the “dirtiest” environment in the body, teeming with microbes.

An extraction site is a wound. We are asking the body to heal a wound in a sea of microbes! Therefore, make sure you are cleaning the entire mouth at least twice a day, carefully brushing the teeth in the region of the extraction. You can also use a saltwater mouth bath several times a day to assist hygiene, making sure you do not swish vigorously (we need to preserve the friable blood clot!).

Don’t forget sound nutrition – the body needs a balanced array of vitamins and minerals to aid the process of healing.

Simple steps will make all the difference!

If you have any other questions regarding your dental care, you can call our Morwell dental practice on (03) 5134 1311.

Eat before an extraction!

Eat before an extraction!

Some patients choose not to eat anything before having a dental extraction. This can sometimes result in patients feeling lightheaded in the surgery, and occasionally fainting. Its always best to eat something which is nutrient dense before an extraction. If a patient is unable to eat, at least ingest a drink that contains sugar such as a sweetened cordial. This will ensure blood sugar levels will not fall too low during a procedure so we can avoid this sort of complication.

If you have any other questions regarding your next procedure you can call our Morwell dental practice on (03) 5134 1311.
