What age should your child first go to the dentist?

What age should your child first go to the dentist?

We are often asked at what age children should start visting the dentist. Regular dental examinations are an essential component of lifelong dental health. Starting on a solid footing will make this process much easier over time. We recommend a child’s first dental examination should be as soon as we can get some basic cooperation in the chair- for most children this is usually in the range of 2-3 years. If an initial examination is quite easy, the probability of a child having a positive attitude towards dental health increases significantly. Parents should also discuss an initial visit in the same context. If a child approaches a new experience in a relaxed manner, outcomes are improved. Apprehensive and worry tend to be learned behaviours. Being positive will set the tone for an equally positive first dental experience.

Some children will be eligible for Medicare’s Child dental benefit schedule. The Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule covers a broad range of basic dental services. You can call our friendly staff on (03) 5134 1311 to see if your child is eligible.

What sort of toothbrush should I use?

What sort of toothbrush should I use?

We are often asked about what sort of toothbrush to use. Given the key aim of the brush is to remove plaque and food debris, we always recommend one that is soft bristled. A soft bristle brush is more than sufficient for this purpose. The use of a medium or hard brush, coupled with an aggressive action, will cause damage to the tooth surface over time. Cleaning with a firmer toothbrush will not remove tartar. Tartar needs to be removed at the chairside with an appropriate instrument. So in summary, soft bristled is always best.

Dental Implant

Dental Implant

When considering the alternatives to replacing a lost natural tooth, by far the most aesthetic and functional option is a dental implant. Dental implants are positioned where the root of the former tooth was located. They are literally fused to the bone and support a porcelain crown which can either be cemented or screwed into the implant depending on the case.

There are usually two phases to the treatment plan. Firstly, the implant is placed and allowed to fuse with bone a process referred to as osseointegration. Once this has occurred, the porcelain crown is constructed, being fully customised to the implant and the neighbouring teeth.

Dental implants are a viable option for most teeth that have been lost, although there may be some exceptions. The quality and quantity of the bone available is very important, together with certain anatomical structures that may limit what can be done. We are always happy to evaluate patients who are considering a quality alternative to replacing missing teeth.
